Adelaide one step closer

The former warship, HMAS Adelaide is expected to be handed over to the State Government in June for sinking off Terrigal.

The ship is currently being stripped of her military hardware at the Garden Island Naval Base in Sydney in preparation to handing over by the Department of Defence.

In early March the Minister for the Central Coast, John Della Bosca, Member for The Entrance and Federal Member for Robertson, Belinda Neal inspected the Adelaide for one last look at the vessel prior to it being prepared for sinking as a dive site.
It is expected that it will be sunk by June 2009 with the vessel’s mast being located at Norah Head. Mr Della Bosca said the State Government had lobbied hard and won the bid for the Adelaide despite competition from the other states.

As a dive site the Adelaide is expected to generate $11 million in tourism in the first year of operation.
