Latest data shows Coast is the home for micro and small businessRecently published ABS data indicates that of the 22,548* businesses registered on the Central Coast 56% are non-employing businesses and 29% employ 1 – 4 people. A further 11% employ 5 – 19 people, leaving 4% of businesses in the medium and large size categories by employment numbers.Confirming the micro size of Coast businesses 25.7% have a turnover of less than $50,000 and a further 20.8% have a turnover of less than $100,000. In fact it could be said that 46.5% of Coast businesses barely provide a wage for their owners. Counts of Australian Businesses by Turnover*
*NOTE: The Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits, June 2003 to June 2007 presents counts of businesses based on snapshots of actively trading businesses as at June 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Business Register. A business entry or exit event is the registration or cancellation of a business for an ABN or GST purposes. Further analysis of the new data shows that 25% of all businesses are engaged in the Construction industry. Of the 5,553 businesses in this industry 3,300 or 59% are in the non-employing category and a further 1,752 or 31% employ 1 – 4 people. This would indicate that these businesses are sub-contractors or tradesmen who are employed via a business entity. 25% of businesses are engaged in Property and Business Services while 13% are engaged in the Retail Trade. Of all the businesses in the region, 72 employ more than 100 people. |
