Understanding Carbon and Emissions Trading
As part of The University of Newcastle’s Executive and Corporate Development Program, a one-day seminar, “Our Carbon Constrained Future – A Challenge and an opportunity for Australian Business” will be held at the Central Coast Campus in early August.
Carbon trading is coming to Australia and by 2010 Australia will have a Carbon and Emissions Trading Scheme (AETS) in place. This will create a significant change for the way all businesses operate bringing with it substantial costs, challenges and opportunities.
Carbon trading is a relatively complex way of creating and sharing a cost of carbon across polluting industries.
Here is a simple quiz to help you to understand how well your business is placed for carbon trading in 2010: • What are your current greenhouse gas emissions? • What does a $20 carbon price do to your business costs (what about $40)? • Can you pass these costs on to your customers or will they reduce your profit? • Can your accounting system cope with carbon costs, carbon expenses and carbon revenue? • What are your internal emissions reduction opportunities? • What about electricity and gas reduction opportunities? • Will you need to buy emissions allowances and acquit them? • What is your purchasing and risk management strategy for carbon credits? • Do you have carbon abatement project opportunities? • What carbon price are you modelling into your new business projects/factories/plants? • How will your company’s bonus and incentive system cope with this steep increase in costs?
The course is run by one of Australia’s leading energy and carbon trading consultants – Chris McPherson, who is also a senior consultant at Energetics – Australia's leading integrated climate change, energy/water efficiency and sustainable solutions provider. He lives on the Central Coast and works with businesses developing carbon and greenhouse strategies and business solutions.
Who should attend This seminar is designed for managers of medium and large size companies in energy intensive industries, finance industry professionals and business people interested in understanding this new dynamic business area.
