Wyong Council's plans to revitalise Toukley

Wyong Council is moving forward with a planning framework to revitalise the Toukley peninsula, with the Toukley Planning Strategy aimed to support the economic viability of the Toukley Town Centre into the future.

A Council spokesman said, “We intend to progress the work on the Toukley Planning Strategy and provide a framework for the recommendations contained in the Central Coast Regional Strategy released in July 2008.”

Among other things, the Strategy allows Council to encourage growth in the Toukley area with the growth restriction for Toukley being deleted and replaced with a generic Centres requirement.

Toukley to share in residential growth
The Centre’s growth target calls for an additional 14,500 dwellings to be distributed throughout the Shire’s existing centres, and Toukley could be expected to take up a share of this growth. Mayor Bob Graham said Council’s strategy was aimed at boosting Toukley’s economy.

“By bringing more people into the area, we will be bringing more money into the area and at the moment, that’s exactly what Toukley needs,” Mayor Graham said. “Council will also be looking at capitalising on assets in the area such as Canton Beach and Norah Head with the intention of facilitating tourist related development on private land.
“By improving areas such as Canton Beach, this will allow us to attract tourists to the area which can only boost the local economy,” he said.

Council has also been working hard to entice a second supermarket to the Toukley Town Centre.
Funding for the Toukley Planning Strategy has already been allocated in Council’s 2008/09 Management Plan and the Future Planning Unit’s 2008/09 Work Program.

It is intended that a final Toukley Planning Strategy will be ready for Council’s consideration by mid 2009.
