$16 million earmarked for Ourimbah Campus over next 3 years

The University of Newcastle and Commonwealth Government are to spend approximately $16 million in capital works at the University’s Central Coast Campus at Ourimbah over the next three years as part of the recently released Masterplan for the Campus.

The release of the Masterplan comes as the Ourimbah Campus celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2009. Commenting on the investment, Professor Stephen Crump, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director, Central Coast Campus said, “The program of works planned on the Central Coast Campus represents a significant investment by the University and Commonwealth Government in the future of the region.”

“With the introduction of new courses, and demand for places increasing every year, there is need to provide more purpose-built, quality teaching and learning spaces, not only for the University but also for use by our TAFE students.”

“The new facilities will allow prospective students to take advantage of the educational opportunities available from the extensive range of courses and degree programs we offer.”

“The capital works program, in conjunction with the recently released Campus Masterplan, provides a coordinated approach to the future development of the Central Coast campus for the next 5-10 years.”

Central Coast Campus capital works program
Proposed capital works projects for the University of Newcastle Central Coast Campus 2009 – 2011:
University funded
• Public Podiatry Clinic at Wyong Hospital
• New psychology teaching space within the Exercise Science Building
Commonwealth-funded through the Capital Development Program
• Education and Nursing Teaching Building
• Exercise Science Building
Commonwealth-funded Better Universities Renewal Fund
• Additional funding to extend gym and amenities facilities in Exercise Science Building
• Extension to the Information Resource Centre (IRC) Building

Strategic Masterplan Projects
The Strategic Masterplan identifies that the Central Coast Campus has weaknesses in its existing structure and functionality that could be addressed with the implementation of three main projects. These projects aim to bring the maximum benefit of cohesion and enhanced vibrancy on campus.
The projects include:
- Activation of the Quadrangle
- Strengthen Campus routes and gathering spaces
- New accessible mixed use precinct - residential, commercial, and community

Further expansion of the Campus should occur to the west, raised over the existing at-grade car parks. Development of the car park site would consolidate activity around the Quadrangle, contributing to its invigoration as an active heart to the Campus.
