Avoca Engineering in expansive mood

Toolmaking and CNC component manufacturer, Avoca Engineering is expanding and will move to new premises at North Wyong in early 2008.

Marketing Director, Martin Tanti, said that the company has outgrown its present facilities at Gavenlock Road, Tuggerah, from where they have operated since starting in business seventeen years ago. The company is presently building a new 2,000sqm factory and 400sqm of office space on a 4,500sqm block at Willow Tree Road, North Wyong, representing with new plant and equipment, a total investment of almost $5 million. "We presently employ thirty people here at Tuggerah but our goal is to increase that to eighty over the next five years and build our turnover up to around $10 million per annum,” said Mr Tanti.
Avoca Engineering specialises in the design and building of specialised machinery for the food processing, medical, aerospace, defence and mining and electronics industries. “Our success over many years has been due to our high standards of quality. We have had ISO9001 accreditation since 2000,” said Mr Tanti. “Our move into a new factory environment will give us the opportunity to introduce Lean Manufacturing and further improve on efficiencies that will maintain our competitiveness.” he said.

Growing the skills base
Mr Tanti and his partner, Operations Director Udo Scholl, said that one of the greatest challenges facing the growth of their business is the shortage of skilled workers. “With our new facility we will be able to further promote our company as a preferred employer offering our staff sound career paths,” they said.
The company presently employs six apprentices, two of which will graduate to tradesmen at the end of this year. “Next year we will be starting another three apprentices,” said Mr Scholl. Avoca Engineering obviously is a sound training ground for apprentices, two of their Third Year apprentices won National Apprentice of the Year Awards recently in World Skills Australia’s, Team Australia 2007 Awards. Michael Wilson was first in Australia for Fitting and second for Toolmaking while Ben Cox was first for Turning and third for Fitting.
