Thiess wins regional waste contract

Thiess Environmental Services has won the Regional Waste Collection contract for Gosford and Wyong Councils and will operate from a new facility to be built at Somersby when the contract takes effect in February 2008. The contract is for ten years.

This is the first time that the two councils have come together to operate a synchronised regional waste collection system.
Presently, SITA Environmental Systems and SMS Municipal Services operate household waste collection in Gosford and Wyong respectively. Gosford operates a 3-bin per household service (waste, recyclables and green waste) while Wyong operates a 2-bin service.   A standardised 3-bin service will operate when the new contract comes into force.
The new regional arrangement comes about as a result of an initiative of the now defunct Central Coast Waste Board which, in 1998, identified the benefits of a synchronised waste collection to reduce domestic waste and introduce greater efficiencies.
At the time services provided by each Council differed in relation to types of services and the expiry dates of contracts.
Contracts were let with a common expiry date so that a regional contract could be let.
Property developers, Hunter Land Pty Ltd, have purchased a large greenfield site on Pile Road, Somersby and will construct the new facility for Thiess.
