Central Coast Medicare Local

As a key component of the Australian Government’s National Health Reform, the Central Coast Division of General Practice has been successful in its application to develop the Central Coast Medicare Local from July 2012. The Division will evolve to coordinate primary health care delivery and tackle local health care needs and service gaps. It will drive improvements in primary health care and ensure that services are better tailored to meet the needs of the local community.

Established in 1998 the Division is dedicated to assisting local general practitioners and their staff in supporting and developing their clinical and business needs and is active in facilitating general practice input into regional, state and national initiatives. It currently provides a number of programs and services to assist GPs, practice nurses and practice staff in the provision of high quality primary care and efficient practice systems.

The Division has a proud history of embracing change and leading innovation. The Division was a leader in implementing the Practice Support model of General Practice enhancement and was one of the first to implement secure electronic data transfer between GP’s, hospitals and specialists in 2005. Contemporary Government initiatives such as the Aboriginal Closing the Gap Program and mental health programs have been embraced and successfully integrated into primary health care services with various shared care initiatives implemented across the Division and the Local Health District.

The Central Coast Medicare Local will be an independent legal entity that has strong local governance, including broad community and health professional representation, plus business and management expertise.

The Division looks forward to the evolvement of the Medicare Local, in particular working closely with the community, local health care providers and the local health district in providing a cohesive and uncomplicated system of local health care with improved access to health services.
