Shanghai Government keen to invest in Wyong

Early December saw Wyong Council host a delegation from the Shanghai Government in what is believed to be the first time officials from any major Chinese Government has visited an area outside a major city.

The delegation was lead by Zheng Xu Dong, the Division Chief of the Overseas Chinese Affairs office of the Shanghai Government.

Although they spent the whole day in Wyong Shire, the main purpose of the visit was to investigate the site for the proposed $500 million Chinese Cultural Centre Theme Park at Warnervale.

The visit to the Shire was covered by no fewer than five major newspapers back in China.

"Mr Zheng indicated to us he was excited by the concept and promised support for the proposal from his Government," Mayor Bob Graham said.

"I think the visit was incredibly positive and the opportunities for developing closer relations with such a large Government are boundless."

Besides the Theme Park inspection, the Shanghai delegation's program included a Mayoral Reception at Council's Civic Centre, a tour of the Norah Head Lighthouse, The Entrance and Magenta Shores resort that has recently been acquired by Chinese investors.

"For them to come to Wyong is a tremendous sign of confidence and interest in investing in our Shire," Mayor Graham said.
