ABS reclassifies Gosford/Wyong as Central CoastThe NSW Business Chamber’s Central Coast regional office has met with success in its campaign to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to have the Central Coast recognised as a geographic region.Regional Manager, Mary Doherty said, “We’ve recently received a response to our campaign to get regional recognition for the Central Coast from the ABS. I’m pleased to announce that the ABS has agreed to rename their Gosford/Wyong geographic classification to Central Coast.” The ABS agreed that the area be officially recognised as the Central Coast and the latest version of the ASGC (Australian Standard Geographical Classification) available on the ABS Website has this change included. Previously this region was recognised separately as Gosford and Wyong under the ASGC. The ABS said a new classification – the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) is to be developed. The Chamber's success with the ABS coincides with their joint 'I love the Central Coast' campaign with Federal Member for Dobell, Craig Thomson MP which was launched in early October. Mr Thomson is urging all governments to recognise the Central Coast as a region in its own right. 'I love the Central Coast' is supported by politicians from all three levels of Government, sporting organisations, business and education leaders, media, health professionals, prominent Central Coast citizens, artists and several other community groups and individuals. Mr Thomson said the Central Coast has a population of more than 300,000 people but its institutions are constantly divided between Sydney and Newcastle. He said in particular, State Government institutions need to change. |
