Colongra Power Station lifts Delta Electricity to Australia's largest generator
Delta Electricity has become the largest capacity electricity generator in the country with the opening of Colongra Power Station near Lake Munmorah in late December.
The $500 million, 667 MW gas-fired power station is a low emission facility that can be turned on in minutes to meet demand spikes for electricity by householders, industry or community facilities.
“With the completion of this major energy infrastructure project we have lifted Delta’s total generation capacity to more than 5000MW,” said Greg Everett, Delta Electricity’s Acting Chief Executive.
“This milestone will only intensify our efforts in leadership for the industry in Australia.
“As an industry leader, we have improved the performance of our portfolio of power stations to operate at, or better than, standards which have been set for plant of its age and type.
“We built and now operate, with the CSIRO, a pilot carbon capture facility at Munmorah Power Station, one of four projects in the Asia Pacific partnership program,” he said.
Natural gas is the main energy source for the Colongra Power Station which is delivered via an innovative pipeline that was built by Jamena Gas Networks which which own and operate the natural gas network throughout NSW.
The nine kilometre 42” pipeline is the largest on-shore gas pipeline in Australia and connects to the Sydney-Newcastle Pipeline.
The pipe acts as a storage bottle which allows the station to run at full capacity for five hours even if there is an interruption to gas supplies.
Mr Everett said that the project has been constructed using the most innovative gas electricity generation methods and equipment. It is configured as four power generators using flexible and environmentally friendly dual-fuel turbines. Should there be an interruption to the natural gas supply for any reason it can still generate electricity using diesel fuel.
Construction of the power station commenced in October 2007.
“This is a day of celebration for Delta and all of the contractors who helped to build this power station. Alstom and Jemena contributed over 900,000 man hours to build Colongra Power Station with an exceptional safety record,” said Mr Everett at the opening.
Central Coast subcontractors involved in the construction include Bolte Civil, Bob Warren Electrical and Stowe Australia.
