Mars Inspirational Athletes for April announced
Central Coast Academy of Sport Rugby Union scholarship holder, ZacMcGowan, and Lawn Bowls scholarship holder, Kristy Flaxman are April’s MarsInspirational Athletes.

15-year-old Zac joined the Academy in October 2008 when the 2008/09 Rugby Union program commenced, and has impressed both on and off the field. The Terrigal High School student has been a Central Coast representative in rugby union since 2006, and was captain of his Central Coast Junior Rugby Union team in 2007. He has also captained teams in the under-12s and under-13s with The Entrance Rams. An all-round sportsperson,

Zac is also a talented swimmer, having competed in the Sydney North Swimming Championships in 2005. Further highlighting his involvement and commitment to rugby union was Zac’s selection in the 2009 Country Referees Program. 

“The Academy works with a lot of talented athletes every year, but every so often someone who stands out from the crowd comes along. Zac is one of those,” said Sean Feakes, Manager of the CCAS Rugby Union program. 24-year-old Kristy was one of nineteen athletes who joined the Central Coast Academy of Sport’s inaugural Lawn Bowls program in 2008. Kristy started as a lawn bowler at a very young age and in her early careershe represented NSW in the under-18 Junior Girls team. She also won anumber of district and club championships.After a seven year break from the sport, Kristy returned to lawn bowls in 2007 and immediately began working on building form. The hard work paid off straight away, and shortly after re-entering the sport, Kristy won the Minor Pairs Championship at her home club, The Bay Sports Club. Kristy’s main focus is on her university studies, where she is training to become a teacher. Kristy’s goals for the future are simple: to represent NSW again and one day make the Australian team.


Nikki Garrett second in European Golf Cup
Australia’s team of Nikki Garrett and Joanne Mills has tied second in the European Nations Golf Cup in Spain.

The Central Coast’s Nikki Garrett, who, with Joanne Mills makes up the Australian team in the European Nations Golf Cup, finished second behind the Dutch team who came from two shots behind to win by four strokes at the La Sella Resort in Denia in late April.

Australia shared second place with the Italian and French teams on 14-under. Nikki and Joanne combined for a final-round of 71 playing Valencian Cup format.
