Wyong Mayor out of the hat

Councillor Bob Graham survived a draw out of a hat to be returned as Mayor of Wyong Shire Council at its September 18 meeting.

Clr Graham and Clr Doug Eaton both nominated for Mayor and received five votes each, forcing the Mayoral election to a hat draw, with General Manager, Kerry Yates drawing out the incumbent Mayor’s name.

As with many Mayoral elections there had been extensive lobbying behind the scenes as to who would be Mayor. As late as the afternoon of the day of the meeting, Clr Eaton appeared to have the numbers in a concerted move to edge Clr Graham out. However, in the event and at the last moment, one councillor obviously changed their mind.

It was a similar story with the vote of the Deputy Mayor coming out of a hat, with Labor B Ward Councillor Lisa Matthews defeating Greens Councillor Sue Wynn.

It now sets up an interesting scenario for who will be elected Mayor next year in the lead up to the State Elections.
